Routine Electrical Checklist For Your Home

We want to let you know that we are still open during the COVID-19 outbreak. At Milton Electric, we are taking the necessary steps to ensure that our employees and customers stay safe. If you have some free time, now’s the perfect opportunity to check around your home and ensure that all your electrical outlets, lights, cords, etc are functioning properly. We’ve broken down everything for you below. If any problems arise, please reach out to us. We’d be happy to help.

1. Have you checked your outlets?

  • Check that your GFCI (ground-fault circuit-interrupter) outlets are working properly. Simply press the “Test” button. You will hear a snap sound that trips the outlet.
  • Are any of your outlets warm or buzzing?
  • Do your outlets make a popping sound?

2. Check your electrical service panel or load center

  • Are there loose breakers?
  • Is there visible damage?
  • Does the panel appear to be wet?
  • Are there charring or burn marks?
  • Are your circuit breakers labeled properly?
  • Do you know which breaker connects to which circuits or outlets in your home?
  • Are there any breakers that feel warm?
  • Do you have a main disconnect switch?

3. Have you checked your lights?

4. Don’t forget about those cords and plugs!

  • Are there frayed casing, exposed wires, or broken components?
  • Are your extension cords rated properly for indoor/outdoor use?
  • Do you have any cords running through walls, ceilings, windows, doors, or any other place they can be tripped on or pinched?
  • Do your plugs fit snugly into outlets?

5. Check your Electrical Appliances

  • Are any kitchen appliances near the sink or any other water sources? Are they plugged into the GFCI outlets?
  • Have you cleaned your oven, range, and exhaust in the last 6 months?
  • Have you ever received a shock from one of your major appliances?
  • Is there enough air circulation around your dryer and refrigerator?
  • Are there any wires too close to heat producing sources, such as the toaster, oven, or stove top?

6. Some warning signs you need to call an electrician immediately

Routine checks on electrical outlets and appliances should happen on a regular basis. This ensures that you are proactive instead of reactive, which can save you money!
